Extend the hybrid model to isolated production, lab, CNC, OT, or specialized systems through a controlled handoff. Design the transfer around equipment capabilities and actual CUI movement.
What belongs in the boundary
Cloud services, approved engineering endpoints, transfer stations, media, operators, locations, and each specialized asset. Asset categorization and applicable protections depend on the actual function and assessment scope.
Implementation work
- Trace files, formats, transfer directions, and equipment limitations.
- Define approved transfer stations and media, authorization, malware inspection, custody, sanitization, and storage.
- Use compatible encryption and controlled access where supported; document the selected safeguards and any limitations.
- Test the handoff with operators and retain transfer procedures, approvals, training, validation, and residual-risk decisions.
Evidence and operating responsibilities
- Boundary and data-flow records; asset and authorized-user inventories.
- Configuration baselines, control narratives, owner assignments and operating procedures.
- Validation results, access reviews, monitoring records and recovery tests.
Decisions to resolve before deployment
An air gap alone is not a complete safeguard. If equipment cannot read encrypted media, the handling process needs compatible protections and review; do not assume encryption or an exception automatically resolves the requirement.
